I am Yoshinori Moriwaki. I was born in Japan and I am a senior architect and civil engineer. When I first came to Türkiye, I saw the beauty of this country, but I also saw the reality of earthquakes, the weaknesses in buildings, and people's desire for "safer living." After the 1999 Marmara Earthquake, I thought to myself: "I must stay here and share what I know." Since then, I have been traveling around Anatolia with my briefcase; I tell the same thing to kindergarten students, to construction workers, to mayors: We will live with earthquakes, but we will do so with the right rules, the right buildings, and the right education.
We were driven by the same sentiment when founding Moriwaki Limited. We didn't want this company to be merely a trading company; we wanted it to be a bridge that combined Japan's discipline and technology with Türkiye's manufacturing power and its rapidly learning people. Earthquake safety, energy and environmental solutions, food and agriculture projects – all are answers to the same question: "How can this country live more safely, more efficiently, and with greater dignity?"
I consider Türkiye my second home. A product manufactured in Türkiye appearing on shelves in Japan, a municipality strengthening its disaster response with Japanese technology, a contractor building more resilient homes… all of these are not just jobs for us, but the part of fostering a lasting friendship between the two countries, a role for engineers.
I hope that one day we will hear the same sentence in other countries: "We also want to build our buildings to Turkish standards." When that day comes, we will know that the small steps we are taking today have not been in vain.
With love and respect,
Yoshinori Moriwaki
